Tournament number seven in this year’s qualifiers for a place in the UAE World Corporate Golf Challenge National Final took us to the truly magnificent setting of Yas Links Golf Club in Abu Dhabi. Yas Links is the number one ranked golf course in the UAE and was voted by Golf Digest number 24 in World’s Best Golf Courses outside the USA.
With the weather set in the mid 20’s, the temperature was perfect for some high scoring…but the famous Abu Dhabi wind, which always seems to pick up at 1.01pm (it was a 1.00pm shot gun start) made the already challenging course even tougher. It was going to take some steady golf to come out on top and win one of the three qualifying places available for the UAE National Final. With the format being a combined Stableford, with each player off ¾ of Index, the challenge was set.
It was some strong determination which proved the defining factor in winning one of the coveted final three places. In 3rd place with 62 points were John Gower & Roman Hawckak from Basatin Landscaping, in 2nd Place with 63 points were Sid Elday & Keith Davidson from Al Nahiya, and the winners with 65 points were Aart Lehmkuhl & Henry Kim from Emirates Insurance. There were additional on course prizes with OnCourse Golf-sponsored Nearest to the Pin in 3 on hole 7 won by Roman Hawczak and Daman Investments-sponsored Nearest to the Pin on hole 13 won by Kristian Chorlton. There was also the hole in one prize sponsored by Virgin Atlantic of two premium economy flights to New York, which again went unclaimed.
We now head into our Final Qualifier of the UAE Series at the Jumeirah Golf Estates on the Fire Course on Friday the 17th of May.
